Sero SLIT – The Allergy Assassin

Sero SLIT

Allergies?

Asthma?

Discover Sublingual Immunotherapy breath FREE

Desensitization therapy for INDOOR & OUTDOOR allergens:
Pollens, Cockroach, Molds, Dust Mites, & Pet Dander

Sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) is a treatment for the management of seasonal & perennial allergies, and asthma. SLIT is self-administered by the patient, by placing varying concentrations of highly purified allergen extracts under the tongue – allergy immunotherapy without shots.

SLIT is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and allergy specialists throughout the world as a viable alternative to allergy shots.

SLIT is a valuable therapy for healthcare providers that are interested in offering their allergy and asthma patients an efficacious, safe, and cost-effective immunotherapy option.

How does SLIT compare with conventional allergy medications?

SLIT (sublingual immunotherapy) is a treatment for allergies and asthma, where patients are orally administered small doses of substances to which they are allergic (allergens).  The dosage of allergens is gradually increased over time – just enough to stimulate the immune system, but not enough to cause a full-blown allergic reaction.

Conventional allergy medications, such as antihistamines and inhaled/topical steroids, are designed to temporarily mask allergy symptoms, and require life-long use. The cost of these medications is substantial, and may have long-term side-effects.

In Contrast, the process of SLIT treats the underlying cause of allergy and/or asthma symptoms.  SLIT desensitizes or “re-educates” the body’s immune system so that it does not overreact to allergens from natural exposure, thereby reducing/elimination allergy symptoms, and the long-term need for allergy medication.

Which types of allergies can be treated with Immunotherapy?

The most common allergies that are treated with SLIT include Allergic Rhinitis (Hay fever), Water/Itchy Eyes, Asthma, Chronic Sinus Infections, and Chronic Cough.

SLIT vs. Allergy Shots

SLIT is preferable for most allergy and asthma sufferers due to its convenience, and overall lower cost.

Detox for Weight Loss

Technology. We live in a grand time of technological development. Computers, the Internet, cell phones, digital cameras and DVDs. But the human body has not ‘kept up’ with technology. Human beings certainly shouldn’t eat technology! But that is happening today as a result of the onslaught of chemicals in our foods and environments, and with the impending threat of chemical warfare.

This very second, your physical body is mysteriously functioning internally exactly the way human bodies functioned 10,000 years ago. Because our bodies today are the same as in the past, it is critical to eat, drink, and live the same as in years past – centuries past. But modern societies are adopting one of the most unnatural lifestyles known to mankind. Cancer rates and cardiovascular disease in the United States alone are among the highest in the world as a result of technology interfering with our food supply and living environments.

So Why Detox?
Have you ever washed greasy dishes without hot water or dish soap? The dishes don’t get clean, do they? When toxic metals and chemical food additives get inside your body, it takes a strong “cleanser” to scrub your body clean from the inside out. The combination of vitamins and minerals through detoxification work in this fashion to remove toxins from your body tissues and body organs, from your water stores, fat deposits, and within your bloodstream. Natural cleansing is critical to remove body toxins, and protects from re-depositing them somewhere else in the body.

Toxins such as lead, mercury, and the side effects of aspartame’s by-products of formic acid and formaldehyde, block nutrients from getting into normal body cells in the same fashion a lead shield blocks radiation during an x-ray.

If toxins are present within your body, oxygen and the body’s “food supply” cannot get inside your cells to supply needed nutrients, nor can the cells’ waste products get out. Diseases, such as cancer, now have an environment in which to form. When these body toxins are removed, your body can then restore a healthy balance.

Identify, Remove, and Restore
The basic philosophy behind any effective detox program is to identify, remove, and   restore

Identify what toxins are at the root of your health problems

Identify = chelation challenge

Remove the toxins by cleansing your body.

Remove = detoxification: Ultra Clear Renew, Avoclear

Restore lost nutrients

Restore = nutritional supplements

What is a chelation challenge?
The chelation challenge combines an IV and urinalysis to excrete the heavy metals from your body for analyzing . Ca+EDTA works to remove these toxins from your body and process them through the kidneys and a urinalysis sample is used to identify which heavy metals are present and how much. The urinalysis is then sent out for laboratory testing and depending on the results, detoxification may be your next step

Ultra Clear Renew/AvoClear
Toxins are at the root of most diseases, and once they are removed, health and well being return. An effective detoxification plan removes the source of disease symptoms, such as aspartame or radiation poisoning, detoxifies toxic residue from the body, and replaces specific nutrients to regain a state of wellness. Using these products, the body removes toxins from chemicals quickly and can actually remove most chemical toxins from your body tissues and body organs, from your water stores, and from fat stores within your bloodstream, along with assisting with the elimination of those toxins via the bowels and pores of the body.

Mind That Spine

As seen in “Natural Awakenings” by Traci Moore

Recent estimates indicate that 90% of Americans will experience back pain during their lifetimes. Those of us who haven’t yet felt that little crick or twinge can be proactive, however, and increase our chances of remaining pain-free. Three Tucson health practitioners, Dr. Bruce Sadilek, Patrick Moore, and Bruce Franke Jr., share their tips on how you can support your spine and keep it strong and flexible for decades.

Naturopathic physician Dr. Bruce Sadilek says the most important step toward spinal health is movement. “Staying physically active will keep the small back muscles strong; this is the biggest key in maintaining good musculoskeletal support.” People new to exercise regimes can begin by walking 20-30 minutes per day, becoming involved in a structured weight training program, practicing gentle yoga stretches or enrolling in a core muscle-building class. An added benefit to integrating these exercise programs into your life is weight loss. Dr. Sadilek stresses that obesity can severely exacerbate back problems. “The more weight we carry in front of our belly, the more torque on the back.”

Sadilek advises that we become aware of our body’s movement in space and time. He feels it’s crucial to assess your posture and determine how to sit in the most biomechanically correct position. For instance, as you read this article, are you slouched or sitting erect? Is your chair supporting your back? When you walk, are you wearing supportive footwear? Make adjustments where necessary.

Next, know your limitations. When lifting heavy objects, find a helper. Instead of lifting with your arms, let your leg muscles (or “glutes”) do the work. Structure your work area and surrounding equipment so your body is secure. Overextending your body will increase your chance of injury. With a chuckle, Sadilek says, “Ideally, think before you lift.”

People who are fatigued, overly stressed or not sleeping well, says Dr. Sadilek, are more prone to injury, and should temporarily avoid heavy lifting. We can reduce our chances of acquiring back injuries by insuring that we get adequate rest. Sadilek advises us to consume a healthy diet and add supplements to our regimen: glucosamine chondroitin, essential fatty acids, a quality multi-vitamin and at least 2000 mg of vitamin C per day. To keep our backs, bodies and brains relaxed, he recommends that we also treat ourselves to a therapeutic massage once a month.

Patrick Moore, a medical massage therapist, believes it is important to listen to our bodies. “If we pay attention to early warning messages, then more dramatic messages, like injury, are less likely to occur.” He admits that aches and pains can also help us. “Sometimes back pain makes you lie flat on your back, where you can’t do anything but think about your life.”

Patrick personally learned this message when he was a young carpenter wrestling with a crane load. His low-back injury occurred during a phase in his life when he was seeking a more fulfilling a career. “Though I had to stay home for three days to see a chiropractor and physical therapist, the experiences sparked my interest in healing. I entered massage school a year later and I haven’t had back problems since.”

Moore once treated a client with upper back pain for three years. During that time, the client shared her frustration over a family issue she was reluctant to address. When the woman’s pain became unmanageable, she began taking medication that made her so groggy she eventually fell down the stairs and broke her hip. Because she lived alone, and the ambulance didn’t arrive for four hours, the injury could have been life-threatening. Moore explains, “When visiting the hospital, I asked her if it might be time to address her family problem. She said, ‘I’ll take care of it after I heal from this injury.’ ” Moore expressed his concern that avoiding the issue contributed to her health problems. The woman grudgingly took his advice, and her health made a sudden, dramatic change: she had a hip replacement that healed with little pain, and her back pains disappeared. As Moore summarizes, “In her case, part of the solution was massage therapy, and the other part was what she needed to do for herself.”

Physical Therapist Bruce Franke Jr. describes three ways we can help ourselves enjoy spinal health. The first is, simply, walking. He agrees with Dr. Sadilek that thirty minutes of daily walking at a moderate pace enhances muscle control, improves endurance and allows the spine to assume its natural curves. Postural support is the second step. To support the low back for a sustained period of time, he suggests adjusting your chair, using extra padding or replacing your chair, if necessary. The third step is strengthening the body’s core areas (pelvic floor, diaphragm and abdominal wall) to help eliminate potential back injuries.

Before engaging in a new sport or exercise, he suggests we consult with a trainer or therapist to learn how to move both freely and safely. Franke says, “I’ve seen people nearly unable to do their jobs or who were in bed for most of their days, become active again by being committed to walking, postural support and core strengthening while undergoing therapy.”

For those who currently experience back pains or strains, rehabilitation will occur more quickly when these factors are considered:

  • Early intervention is key. The more quickly pain is addressed, the less likely the patient will develop chronic problems.
  • Consider the past. Scoliosis, leg length discrepancies and old ankle, foot or knee injuries may create back strain over time. Such injuries force patients to change the way they transfer loads into their backs, thus creating back pain.
  • Adopt a commitment to becoming well. Be motivated and open to educating yourself about your situation, and completing your rehabilitation program.

Franke reminds us, “If you’ve had an injury, you’ve lost the sense of connection with your body. Retrain your brain to connect with your core.”

Why am I tired? – Fatigue and Adrenal Connection

By Dr. Bruce Sadilek

“I just dragged through my day with a feeling of relentless fatigue.” Often patients claim it feels like they are carrying around a ball and chain that they just can’t seem to shake. Particularly at the hours of ten, two, and four they feel a major drop in energy production and concentration. After a careful review of their history and an examination, there are often many causational factors stemming from an immunological issues to lower hormonal levels and heavy metal exposure. These include Epstein Barr virus and other B-cell viruses, Lyme’s disease and West Nile virus.

These pathogens, along with many others, affect the adrenal gland and it’s proper functioning. First and foremost, we need to rule out causational pathology and concurrently treat adrenal fatigue. Signs and symptoms of adrenal fatigue are difficulty getting up in the morning, continued fatigued not relieved by sleep, cravings for salt or salty foods particularly foods that also contain excessive fats such as potato chips, french fries, etc., increased effort to do everyday tasks, decreased sex drive, light headed when standing up quickly, colds that drag on for multiple weeks, increased PMS, menstrual irregularities, bloating, and irritability.

There are several testing mechanisms to diagnose and effectively treat adrenal fatigue. First and foremost, a complete hormonal profile is utilized. This enables us to find out if there are other deficiencies that exist in the endocrine system. Additionally, we utilize the salivary adrenal function test, and then we follow a specific protocol that allows us to cross correlate this with hypoglycemia. In lipid profiles, we will often see an LDL problem. Finally, we utilize complete metabolic testing to rule out electrolyte imbalances along with renal and/or hepatic problems.

Nutritionally, we treat with a combination of therapies; often intravenous and intramuscular therapeutics will bring about the quickest result. Additionally, some oral supplements that can be helpful are DLPA and vitamin C along with pantothenic acid. Several botanicals are also helpful, for example, Maca and Siberian Ginseng. Adrenal hormone replacement may also be indicated such as DHEA and pregnenolone. Occasionally, pharmaceuticals may prove to be beneficial in the first month or two of treatment.

It is important to remember that adrenal fatigue did not transpire overnight. It is usually a long-term reaction to either a pathogen or continuous, long-term stress. Recuperation time varies as much as three months to twenty-four months depending on the patient’s lifestyle and ability to comply with a therapeutic regime.

If our office can be of any further assistance in helping to diagnose and treat adrenal fatigue, please feel free to contact our office.

Feeling a Fire In Your Chest or Belly? – Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

Dr. Bruce Sadilek as interviewed for Health & Fitness Magazine by Dr. Donna Schwontkowski, Editor

Burping after meals. Regurgitating after meals. The feeling that there’s hot damaging acid in the back of your throat. These are symptoms of GERD, which stands for gastro-esophageal reflux disease, and it’s not pleasant.

Some GERD sufferers are up all night long with a burning sensation in their chest. To them, it feels like there’s a fire inside. Others are constantly clearing their throat and have hoarseness in the morning. And others have a burning or a strange sensation or taste in their mouth, accompanied by dry cough and bad breath.

“Many of my patients with GERD ask, ‘Why can’t I eat the foods I like?’ We program ourselves to eat foods for comfort and consequently become frustrated when we cannot take part in the enjoyment of eating them,” Dr. Bruce Sadilek, Medical Director of Integrative Medical Associates in Tucson, AZ said.

Dr. Sadilek blends traditional medicine with natural methods/alternative healing to create the health that his patients seek.

“In GERD, acids from the stomach move backwards into the esophagus. Think of the esophagus as the food pipe that carries food from the mouth to the stomach,” he said.

This results in the feeling that there’s a fire in their chest, or belly.

The exact causes of GERD are unknown, but some say stress is involved or possibly it’s of bacterial origin. Other researchers and physicians report that the use of alcohol and eating certain foods such as garlic, onions, excessive mint and spicy foods is what triggers it.

It’s possible that obesity, pregnancy, and smoking or a hiatal hernia may also be related to the etiology of GERD.

“The problem is that if GERD isn’t healed, it can lead to esophageal damage and cause esophageal cancers,” Dr. Sadilek said.

Now, specific behaviors such as eating small frequent meals or avoiding known food allergens that can increase the likelihood of gastric irritation can help alleviate GERD, according to Dr. Sadilek.

Even simply elevating the head of your bed 6-8 inches to decrease excessive pressure on the diaphragm and avoiding eating prior to going to bed have helped prevent regurgitation problems at night for thousands of GERD sufferers.

“But the big key is a thorough medical investigation into what could be causing the GERD. Once this has been completed, healing is on the near horizon because a customized program utilizing traditional medicine and natural methods can make a big difference,” Dr. Sadilek said.

To reduce the fire in one’s belly can only be good.

Common Weight Gain

By Dr. Bruce Sadilek

How do you know if your weight gain is caused by a slow thyroid or by hormonal imbalance?

Some common signs that weight gain is related to an underactive thyroid or hormonal imbalance are: cold intolerance, constipation, insomnia, dry skin, thin hair, PMS, and a general decrease in vitality.

Frequently, underactive thyroid will respond well to medications, botanicals and vitamins, but supplementation is not something that can be undertaken on your own because of the complexity of them. For example, at least five minerals are related to thyroid function: iodine, selenium, lithium, manganese, and boron. Then there are the vitamins, vitamin B1, B2, B6, and others that affect the thyroid gland, and even heavy metals like mercury, cadmium, and arsenic can create problems for this master gland that controls so many body functions.

Now if you increase one of the vitamins or minerals without increasing others, you’ll create an imbalance. That’s why I always recommend that minimally, we run a laboratory serology for heavy metal toxicity and lack of essential elements. This will provide some objective evidence and your supplements can be customized.

But there’s a lot more to the thyroid picture. Are you exposed to high levels of phthalates, the chemicals that creates plastics? Phthalates can decrease function of the thyroid gland, especially if there’s already a low iodine level.HCG can be the answer to this sort of problem.

Can you see why self medication according to what someone says on the internet or what you read in a book can go wrong fast?

There are times when a low dose, time-released T3 therapy is appropriate; and times when it’s not.

One of the easiest way to control your weight is to simply evaluate your diet, then make minor changes. Easy-to-digest proteins such as chicken and fish are absolutely essential.

Keep your consumption of carbohydrates – the sweets, breads, potatoes, and rice – down to serving sizes about the size of your palm.

Don’t starve yourself for hours; it’s too easy to binge later. Avoid low blood sugar and you’ll avoid headaches, irritability, loss of concentration and focus, anger outbursts, gorging on cookies or ice cream, fatigue, and other symptoms that interfere with you putting your best foot forward all day long.

One fact many people don’t consider is that a diet high in soy can bind thyroid hormones and cause problems.

Did you know that you can monitor your body temperature when you wake in the morning, and record the readings for a one-week time period? Bring in your record to us and we will use this as well as other blood work-ups during your office visit to interpret your thyroid status.

The basic good health principles of exercise, rest and stress reduction are crucial. Exercise is an important endocrine system regulator; thus, it’s good for your thyroid. That’s why, for example, diabetics can’t miss a day of exercise without feeling like they’re losing ground. So get some exercise!

Rest and stress reduction always increases your body’s rejuvenative power and shows up in how others perceive your vitality.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

By Dr. Bruce Sadilek

Bloating, gas, abdominal pain with distension, pencil stools, diarrhea at times, constipation at other times – these are some of the many signs and symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Most individuals with IBS tend to have had a long history of digestion issues. Other patients will report a traumatic event, such as loss of job or constant aggravations at home or work, and/or family issues that precipitated their IBS. Females tend to be more susceptible than males, which can correlate to menstrual cycles or the onset of peri-menopause. With both men and women, proper hormonal regulation is crucial. Many patients have tried various formulas that seem to help for a week or two. Eventually, they report that the product fails. Remember, the bowel has a magnificent memory and tolerance. What do you do?

  • First, establish normal motility patterns, i.e., train the bowel to empty at designated times that are quiet, non-stressful moments.
  • Regular sleep cycles are critical because of the body’s Circadian rhythm which does not appreciate having its time clock altered.
  • Relaxation techniques seem to benefit, and exercise is also a must to balance motility.
  • Avoid harsh laxatives as they can cause binding and cramping of the gut. Utilize a healing herbal combination containing DGL (deglycerized licorice). Ginger will also reduce bloating.
  • In addition, gentle plant enzymes are efficacious. Try one or two products at a time to see how effective they are.
  • Avoid dairy, wheat and corn products, while eating small, frequent meals to decrease bloating. Balancing your lifestyle and self-expectations will also provide relief.
